Sankey Viaduct — 3mm/ 14.2mm Gauge

13'00"x6'6"

Sankey Viaduct was built by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. It crosses the Sankey Brook just west of Newton-le-Willows and the Sankey Canal which was worked by sailing barges, hence the height of the arches and the embankments at each end.

The layout portrays the area as it would have been shortly after building, complete with a few sightseers which were a normal thing as the viaduct was considered to be a marvel of engineering.

It is built principally in 1/8th inch plywood, glued and pinned, then overlaid with card and hand embossed paper stonework or embossed plastic brickwork. The ground surface is formed from expanded aluminium covered in newspaper and brown paper, then the usual scenic dressings. Trees are twisted wire with teased out polyester wadding and various foliage dressings; hedges are shaped foam strips, dressed as the trees. The scenic dressings used are mainly from ‘Woodland Scenics’ and ‘Greenscene’ available from various traders.
