Ayresome Street & Splice Quarry — 00/009

17'00" X 2'00"

Ayresome Street is inspired by places like Sittingbourne, Cargo Fleet and Scunthorpe . One reason the line survives is the industrial branch which disappears under the warehouse and generates several freight trains each day. The station is also the terminus of a narrow gauge line which has its own high level platforms.

While the layout can be operated on its own at home, it has been built so it joins onto Splice Quarry built by Ken & Mark Howarth. Working together like this makes operating more interesting and a team challenge. It has also made the electrics complicated as I use DCC control at home and we use conventional 12v control when the layouts are joined together.

Splice Quarry was born out of a desire to run trains from A to B rather than just pushing wagons around. Narrow gauge wagons are loaded in the loading dock at the back of the layout before running to Colin's layout to be emptied into standard gauge wagons. These then run to the fiddle yard at this end over a Meccano bridge built as a non-scenic connection.
